Everything You Wanted to Know About Ireland (But Were Afraid to Ask).
Ireland. What a wonderful country to visit and to find out whether all the stereotypes about Irish people are right or wrong. To tell the truth Ireland is worth visiting indeed. The culture and history of the country would amaze you no doubts. But there are so many stereotypes about Irish people. As for me all these stereotypes are half true. Irish people are hilarious, they have wonderful sense of humor. Irish people are witty and smart. They are very interesting and mostly easy-going. At least those Irish I met when visited Ireland. Irish people are very friendly. They are open-minded and are ready to help you any time.
But they say that Irish people are terrible alcoholics and that they spend all the time hanging out in the pubs and bars. They say that the Irish drink Guinness for breakfast. Well, it is funny really. Common guys, if they are brewing up dry stout actually it means nothing. Okay, they like to drink. But it seems like the Dutch, the German, the French like to drink also. I hope you understand what I’m talking about. Also they say that Irish people smoke too much. Well, it is half true.
Irish people still have tough relations with the British. I’m not going to blame anyone but unfortunately it is true. Especially when you visit Belfast. History is history but it seems like people fail sometimes to conclude and they tend to make the same mistakes. Anger and hatred would never bring luck. What the British Government had done was terrible no doubts but not many British people support their parliament and actually they have nothing to do with all the events taken place back to the 18th and 19th century. So one should be much more reasonable and understand that the Government and nation may have nothing in common. It is obvious I think.
They say that the Irish are fighters. Well, I’ve read a lot about it but didn’t see it myself even though visited the country several times and stayed for a long period of time over there. Lucky me!
Another stereotype refers to economic situation in Ireland and asserts that Irish people are very poor. Well, I suppose they were thirty years ago when the situation in the country was deplorable indeed. But today everything is fine.
It is said that Irish people believe in leprechauns. Leprechauns are fairy tale creatures that will fulfill the wishes if you catch another leprechaun. Well, it seems like there is nothing special about it. You believe in Santa Klaus, don’t you? You may find lots of souvenirs of some national symbols over there including leprechauns, four-leaf clovers and many other things as well. But it should be admitted that all these signs of national identity have nothing in common with daily life. Just do not take it too seriously.
And finally Irish people are supposed to swear a lot. Well, it is almost true. And sometimes it is just so funny. I do not justify it. No! But sometimes it looks like it is just okay.
